With the ever-growing reliance on AI in the workplace, more employers are seeking employees with the necessary experience and skills. Employment data cited by The Wall Street Journal found that almost one in four US tech jobs posted so far this year are looking for people with AI skills. But what precisely does that mean?

Diverse Roles in Demand

In some cases, companies are looking for developers who can build and design the required AI tools and platforms. In other cases, they want IT professionals who can manage and support their AI systems. Additionally, organizations need people who can incorporate AI into their regular job duties. Whatever the specific need, it's been growing.

AI-Related Tech Positions Have Doubled

The information sector includes many major tech players heavily involved in AI development and deployment. 36% of the IT jobs posted in January were related to AI. In finance and professional services, banks and consulting firms are seeking employees who know how to build or use AI algorithms and models.

Among other industries, open IT jobs are becoming more focused on AI. For example, AI-related tech positions seen in January were almost double that of a few years ago. The demand started to rise following the debut of ChatGPT at the end of 2022.

Decline in Job Postings but Surge in AI Jobs

In the two years since ChatGPT's official launch, the number of all job postings fell by 17%, suggesting companies have been hiring new employees at a slower rate. However, the number of postings for AI-related jobs jumped from 29,509 to 49,577, a gain of 68%. This trend is referred to as the "clear evidence of a strong ChatGPT effect."

Fastest Growing Jobs

A January LinkedIn report found three AI positions among the 25 fastest-growing jobs in the US, including artificial intelligence engineer and consultant. Many such jobs require experience with large language models, deep learning, and Python programming.

Employers are not just looking for AI developers; they also seek individuals who can integrate AI into existing jobs. For instance, a company may want a cybersecurity engineer who can use AI to better evaluate potential security threats.

Opportunities and Job Security

The need for professionals with AI skills is a boon for tech workers, as such jobs often come with higher salaries and increased job security. Companies are holding onto employees with cutting-edge AI skills due to the current scarcity of talent in this area.
