El Paso's New Manufacturing District

The City of El Paso is making strides towards establishing a new Advanced Manufacturing District, anticipated to generate 17,000 jobs in Far West Texas. Recently, the city council greenlit the construction of the district's first phase at the El Paso International Airport.

Project Overview

This new manufacturing hub will focus on the advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and defense industries. The first phase includes:

  • A 50,000-square-foot stand-alone building
  • Two 100,000-square-foot multi-tenant buildings aimed at supporting small and medium-sized manufacturers

These facilities will provide purpose-built spaces designed for physical, cyber, and digital infrastructure.

Economic Impact

Once completed, the district is expected to:

  • Serve as a launchpad for approximately 300 new small and medium manufacturing companies
  • Create about 4,000 engineering and technology jobs
  • Generate 13,000 high-skill technical jobs by 2030

A city spokesperson highlighted how this initiative will solidify El Paso's role as a leader in innovation and workforce development.

Funding and Vision

The project commenced in September 2022, backed by a $40 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to the West Texas Aerospace and Defense Manufacturing Coalition, with $25 million allocated for the new manufacturing district. This effort is part of the Department of Commerce's Build Back Better Regional Challenge.

Mayor Renard Johnson emphasized the importance of creating high-paying jobs for the community, stating that the Advanced Manufacturing District represents a pivotal investment in El Paso's future, promising life-changing opportunities for its residents and positioning the city as a national leader in advanced manufacturing and innovation.
