A New Hope for Job Seekers
SALINA, Kan. - A bipartisan effort led by Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kansas) and Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Virginia) aims to enhance job opportunities for students through the Jumpstarting Our Businesses by Supporting Students (JOBS) Act. This legislation is designed to help more individuals secure higher-paying jobs by allowing the use of federal Pell grants for shorter-term job training programs.
What Does the JOBS Act Mean for Students?
In a recent discussion with Salina Area Technical College, the implications of this bill were explored. The JOBS Act is set to provide students with the financial support needed to pursue essential skills training, which is increasingly necessary in today's job market.
“The JOBS Act will provide an incredible opportunity for students in an ever-changing job market,” says Senator Marshall. “Our legislation will give Americans the chance to learn critical skills for a successful career.”
Breaking Down Financial Barriers
Greg Nichols, President of Salina Area Technical College, highlighted how this act can significantly impact students:
“A lot of people get turned away because that cost is prohibitive, they can’t afford the cost of the education but they also can’t afford to not work. Having the Pell grant, having the access that is really game-changing for everyone.”
Eligibility and Opportunities
Traditionally, Pell grants are need-based education grants applicable to two-year and four-year universities, typically covering longer courses. However, under the JOBS Act, these grants can now support job training programs that are at least eight weeks long and result in industry-recognized credentials. Programs at Salina Tech, including EMT, truck driving, and CNA training, will now be eligible for this funding.
“It’s a stairstep. When you get access to something that allows you to grow and expand your knowledge and skills, then you have more doors open to you the further you go,” Nichols explained. “That’s what this will allow people to do, but if you can’t access that first step, you’ll never get to be able to become a nurse or a leader in your industry.”
This act is poised to make a world of difference in providing students with the means to pursue their career goals and fill critical roles in various industries.
